Blog #8

Last Wednesday and Thursday, I finished up making all the songs. I ended up cutting Jason Inspiring, Kelsey Sad and Kelsey Inspiring, since we didn't really need more music for them. I then worked on Tess Neutral, which was (loosely) based off of the Beatles since she said she liked them. I am not the hugest fan of the Beatles, personally, but after doing some listening research I had a pretty good idea of their style. I started off with a really simple snare drum rhythm, and then I added some guitar chords. For a more melodic sound, I added a horn-type brass instrument and improvised several runs that could be looped to the correct time length.

I also spent some time fixing up the songs based off of suggestions made by Ella and Zoe once they listened to them. Mark Inspirational and Mark Happy were a bit too similar, so I changed up the horn/brass instrument runs to sound different. Mark Sad was also not sad enough, so I fixed that in a similar way. Finally, we went through some old loops that I had saved on my computer and picked one to use for the introduction, a compilation of b-roll shots with a voiceover.

Overall, making the music was a lot of fun - I haven't gotten around to using Ableton to make loops for quite some time, so it was nice to pick that back up again. I definitely enjoyed making Jason's music the best, since I've never really done any non-digital guitar loops before. I'm probably going to revisit that strategy in the future, since it was really fun and also super simple to create a lot of music in different moods that still sounded similar by virtue of the instrument. I was also pleasantly surprised at the quality of my phone's voice recorder.
