On Tuesday, I continued making music for Jason and Kelsey. For Jason Happy, I decided to use A Major and E Major instead and strum the chords rather than plucking. I also added in D Major, just for funsies. The other bits were very similar to Jason Neutral in that it was a lot of plucked melodies on the guitar and ukulele, layered on top of each other. Jason Sad was pretty much the same, but I used A minor, E major, and F major instead, and plucked the basis chords. While working on Jason's music, it was a lot of fun to use a real-life instrument rather than sequencing everything on the computer. However, because I was working with audio files rather than midi notes, it was really difficult to get everything synced properly. I ended up having to clean up each recording by splitting it up into small parts and starting or stopping the recording at different times, so that the notes would land properly on the beat. I also realized (after recording Jason Neutral and Happy) that my guitar was very out of tune. Fortunately, my ukulele was also out of tune so both of the out-of-tune-nesses matched up quite well with each other!
Kelsey's music gave me a real big headache for much of Tuesday. Her style was alternative punk/pop, and the artists she gave (the Dear Hunter and AURORA) had really different styles both compared to each other and compared to themselves. I had a really hard time pinning down the genre, and I went through a lot of drum loops and synth runs before finally settling on a kind of peppy, pop-ish, not quite alternative and kind of synthpop-like loop. I used guitar and drums to lay down a basic beat and chord progression, and then went over that with a really nice, sizzly-type synth and some bass to get a working Kelsey Neutral. I also took a stab at a Kelsey Happy, but I'm not quite satisfied with that one - it uses the synth for chords rather than the guitar, and the bass as a melody, but I definitely need to make it more palatable.
At the end of Tuesday, I still had several songs to make: Jason Inspiring, Kelsey Inspiring, Kelsey Sad, and Tess Neutral. Currently I'm considering cutting Kelsey Sad (since most of her footage was quite upbeat) and cutting Jason Inspiring (since Jason Happy works well as either).
