Blog #2

We started our project a bit early on Monday by heading down to Ohio Shakespeare in Akron. We took a bunch of b-roll of their Fight Night, a monthly program that teaches stage combat basics to anyone interested in the area. On the night we went, there was a Star Wars theme, and they even brought a BB-8 which was super cute. They used fake lightsabers and went through a couple of sword fighting routines which were really cool to watch.

I thought it was really awesome to see how clearly the instructor, Ryan, loved his job - he was super into it and very cheerful and funny, and it was obvious that he's doing something he loves. It was also cool to see how much detail goes into fake sword fighting and to see all the techniques to make sure you don't actually hit the person you're fake fighting.
In terms of filming, we used Zoe's camera to set up a single stable shot that lasted pretty much the whole hour of Fight Night. Ella and I went around the theater and filmed different angles with our phones.

On Wednesday, we spent the day working on interview questions and figuring out the plot for our documentary. We also messed with different microphones and recorders to see what setup would work; we ultimately went with Zoe's camera for video, the tascam recorder we borrowed from Mr. Greenfield, and Zoe's small Samson desktop microphone. I thought we worked really well as a team, lugging all the equipment down to Akron and setting it all up for our interview with Jason. Ella ran the interview, which went really well, and we also took a bit of extra b-roll of Jason playing the guitar. The lighting wasn't super great, so we ran to walmart afterwards to pick up a spotlight. We went back to Zoe's house to upload all the footage and plan for the next day. Overall, I thought the first two excursions of our project went really well; we got a lot of good footage and worked well as a team.
